Praxis Global Alliance Unveils India’s Blueprint for Patient Safety Excellence with NABH, QCI and NATHealth

October 10, 2024, New DelhiPraxis Global Alliance, a leading global management consulting firm, has released a new white paper, India’s Blueprint for Patient Safety Excellence, at the Arogya Bharat Summit by NATHEALTH in New Delhi. The white paper, developed in collaboration with the Quality Control Council, NABH, and NATHEALTH, outlines India’s progress toward improving patient safety and provides actionable strategies for addressing key challenges within the healthcare ecosystem.

The white paper emphasizes the importance of enhancing patient safety and healthcare quality, essential for ensuring the well-being of individuals in India. Key organizations like NABH, NABL, NHSRC, and CDSCO play a crucial role in maintaining healthcare standards. Government initiatives, such as the National Quality Assurance Standards (NQAS) and the National Action Plan for Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR), are vital to improving safety across healthcare facilities.

To make meaningful improvements, the report recommends a comprehensive approach that focuses on strengthening data infrastructure, workforce development, evidence-based practices, and preventing harm. Collaboration among government agencies, healthcare providers, and accreditation bodies is essential for implementing effective patient safety strategies.

Key Insights from the Report:

  • The maternal mortality rate in India was 103 per 100K live births (2020), far higher than in developed countries, where the rate is less than 5 per 100K live births. Similarly, the neonatal mortality rate was 19.12 per 1,000 live births in India, much higher than in developed nations?

  • India's treatable mortality rate was 180 per 100K population, notably higher than in developed countries, indicating significant gaps in patient safety protocols

  • India has a high prevalence of healthcare-associated infections, contributing to increased morbidity and mortality, and exacerbating the strain on healthcare resources

  • In 2019, India recorded 297K deaths attributable to AMR, with 1M additional deaths associated with it. AMR deaths in India surpass those from cancer and diabetes, with key pathogens like Escherichia coli accounting for 153K deaths

Speaking on the launch of the report, Aryaman Tandon, Managing Partner, Healthcare at Praxis Global Alliance said “At Praxis Global Alliance, we are committed to fostering a safer healthcare environment in India. This report is a pivotal step in addressing the challenges of patient safety, emphasizing collaboration among the Quality Council of India, NABH, and NATHelath to enhance quality and accountability in healthcare. This white paper serves as a call to action for stakeholders to build a safer, more equitable healthcare system, particularly as India advances towards its goal of universal health coverage.

The report also highlights the need for stronger communication between healthcare providers and regulatory bodies to share best practices, address challenges, and foster innovation. Implementing structured communication channels and joint training programs will help strengthen regulatory compliance and enhance patient safety outcomes.
